Background
Carl is the only son of single mother Susan Fraser. His father left her when he found out that she was pregnant. Susan received a lot of support from her family and eventually inherited a small fortune and the old abandonned mansion of her grandfather in Kiloude city to which she moved with Carl. After he had finished the lycée, she signed him up for Beauforêt, hoping that he would be accepted despite lacking a father. The letter of admission made her almost as happy as it made her son happy.

At the age of 17, Carl discovered a Murkrow that frequently found its way into their cellar through a window, only to leave again after some time and to return a few days later. He befriended the Pokémon and, due to its behaviour of constantly fluctuating between the cellar and the environment, gave it the name Persephone.
